What is browser fingerprinting?

When you visit a website, your browser shares details like your user agent, screen resolution, timezone, installed fonts, and GPU. Combined, these signals create a "fingerprint" that can identify you — even without cookies.

Why this matters with a VPN

A VPN hides your IP address, but it does not hide your browser fingerprint. Websites can still recognize you across sessions based on your browser's unique configuration, even if your IP changes.

How to reduce your fingerprint

  • Use a privacy-focused browser (Firefox with strict tracking protection, or Tor Browser).
  • Disable WebRTC if you don't need video calls.
  • Use container tabs or separate browser profiles for different activities.
  • Keep your window maximized to a common resolution to reduce screen fingerprint variation.
